Improving Electric Boat Range: Beyond the Battery

How can we extend range, without adding more batteries?

Range is the first question at the showroom, and it has an obvious answer: more battery. It's also the answer nobody in the industry wants to give. Batteries are heavy, expensive, and eat the space you'd rather fill with people.

The real advancements are happening elsewhere — in motor geometry, hull shape, recovered energy, and how the power gets made in the first place. Four different attacks on the same problem.

What connects them isn't a chemistry breakthrough. Not one of these four was invented for a boat.

EVOA - Stackable Motors

Almost every electric motor you've met is built like a can, with the rotor spinning inside the stator. An axial flux motor is built like a pancake instead — the rotor sits beside the stator rather than inside it. That lets the spinning part be much wider, and a wider spinning part makes more torque from the same magnets and copper.

EVOA's E1 uses motors from YASA, an Oxford spinout now owned by Mercedes-Benz. It was originally built for a sports car project. EVOA made it work on the water.

Flat motors stack. EVOA sells the E1 as a single unit at 225 horsepower or a pair at 450 — no redesign, just another motor bolted on. The torque arrives low enough to turn the propeller shaft directly, so the gearbox disappears along with its noise and its service interval. And the same motor family fits stern drive, V-drive, shaft, jet, and outboard, which lets a builder use one supplier across a whole model line instead of four.

Chris-Craft's Launch 25 GTe is the one you've probably seen: a sterndrive bowrider from a builder that's been at this since 1874, running 420 horsepower off a 133 kWh bank — and yes, you can buy one.

ePropulsion - Hydrogeneration

Cruising sailors have been solving this one by hand for decades — towed generators, prop shafts left unlocked, an hour of engine time at anchor just to put amps back in the house bank. The energy was always there in the water going past. Capturing it was the tricky part.

Hydrogeneration makes it automatic. Under sail, water flow spins the propeller, the propeller turns the motor, and the motor runs backward as a generator. It's regenerative braking, borrowed from the car in your driveway and pointed at a different problem.

ePropulsion put it across the full outboard line in 2021, and it operates between roughly 4 and 10 knots. At the top of that window, the company's own figures: about 330W from a Spirit 1.0 Evo, 660W from a Navy 3.0 Evo, 1,010W from a Navy 6.0 Evo. The window exists because output climbs steeply with boat speed — a knot or two makes a disproportionate difference.

A kilowatt won't refill a large bank in an afternoon, but that's the wrong measure. On a long passage with no shore power, the value isn't the kilowatt-hours — it's not having to start an engine to get them.

Volare: Hydrofoil Assist

Aviation worked this out first. A wing makes lift by moving through a fluid, and water is a fluid roughly 800 times denser than air — which means a very small wing can carry a very large boat.

A hull moving through water fights two things: friction across its wetted surface, and the energy it spends building the waves it leaves behind. Both scale hard with speed, and a planing hull has to climb over a drag hump before it settles. A foil sidesteps the whole argument. Lift rises with the square of speed, so past a threshold the foil is carrying enough of the boat's weight to raise the hull, wetted area collapses, and friction and wave-making drop with it. Research comparing foiling and planing craft found the foiler drew nearly constant power while the planing hull spiked at the hump.

Yacht racing did the development work, with decades of America's Cup money chasing speed rather than range. Volare's founders were direct about why they picked it up: a foil was the path to range and efficiency numbers that could stand next to gas. Nothing about the foil is new. Using one to buy range instead of speed is.

The Artemis 23 is a 23-foot electric catamaran with a foil in the tunnel between the hulls. It's semi-foiling by choice, not compromise. Fully foiling craft need active control systems constantly adjusting to keep flight stable, and that's complexity, cost, and a new set of ways to fail. A foil slung between two hulls is inherently more forgiving — it lifts enough of the boat to matter and leaves the hulls to do what hulls do. On the standard 60 kWh pack it's rated for 50 nautical miles at 23 knots, topping out at 26 knots — about 30 mph. Larger packs go up from there.

The benefit owners tend to mention first isn't range at all. The foil behaves like suspension, rising and falling with the waves, so chop that would beat you up in a monohull gets absorbed instead.

Elvene and Millikan: onboard solar

Solar cells went to space before they went anywhere else. A satellite has no way to refuel, so when Vanguard 1 launched in 1958 it carried silicon cells on its shell — and kept transmitting for years after its chemical battery went flat. Every panel since, on a roof or a boat deck, descends from that constraint.

The math on a boat is more forgiving than it sounds, because the question isn't whether a panel can out-produce the motor. It's whether it can out-produce the motor at the speed you actually cruise. Power demand climbs steeply with speed, so somewhere down the throttle range there's a crossover point where what the array makes matches what the motor draws. Above it you're spending battery. Below it, range stops being a number you have to think about.

Elvene builds around that crossover. The AMY is a 6.5-meter Finnish boat running a 50 kW Molabo ARIES outboard, and it planes — 30 knots flat out, roughly 35 nautical miles at a 20-knot cruise off a 45 kWh bank. Back the throttle down to 5 knots and it enters what Elvene calls solar sailing, where an 800 to 1,300W array covers the draw and range becomes a function of daylight rather than battery.

The M.10 is a 10-meter French catamaran on twin 20 kW Bellmarine motors, and its solar wings deploy from the coachroof to widen the boat from 3.4 meters to 5.5. Ten panels sit on the roof; the two out on the wings are bifacial — glass on both faces — so their undersides harvest light bouncing up off the water, which Millikan measured at roughly 20 percent more yield.

That trick comes from utility solar farms, where bifacial arrays pick up albedo off the ground. Altogether, it's about 6 kWp feeding a 41 kWh bank, good for something near 90 nautical miles at 8 knots.

The Bigger Picture

Four problems, four answers, and not one of them was drawn up for a boat. Axial flux came out of a university lab and a carmaker. Regeneration came off a brake pedal. Foils came from aviation, then from yacht racing, where the point was speed rather than miles. Photovoltaics came from satellites that had no other way to stay powered.

The marine industry spent most of a century solving its own problems on its own budget. It doesn't have to anymore. Carmakers, aerospace, and the energy sector are funding this research now, and boats pick it up a few years later.

Which is why the biggest battery is the least interesting number on a spec sheet. The question worth asking is which of these four fits the way you use a boat — the miles you run, the speed you hold, and how far your slip is from a plug.

How Electrified Marina Powered the First Electric Ferry on the Charles River

He didn't make the game — but three years later, he made the boat

The story behind Wada Hoppah's "Just Get On" — and the electric propulsion and battery guidance that helped make a century-old idea finally work.

Drew Rollert never made the game. The rideshare bailed. The bus ran late. Boston traffic did the rest. Stuck near the Charles River with nowhere to go, he noticed something most people walk past: a city dock, built more than a hundred years ago and used for almost nothing since. The reason was simple. The city regulated gas motors on the river, so a ferry that could actually serve that dock was never viable. The landing was ready. The boat had never existed.

Rollert decided to build the boat.

Three years IN THE MAKING

Building it took three years. Most of that time went into working with city officials, not into the water. Rollert, a software engineer who grew up sailing on the Cape, teamed with Concord boat builder Inriver for roughly eighteen months of design and construction.

Winning over the river meant answering to the people already on it. Rowers have shared these waters for a century, so Rollert designed around them: a wakeless hull modeled on the coaching launches they already trust, licensed captains at the helm, and a 360-degree AI collision-detection system watching the water alongside the crew.

The recognition arrived before the boat did. In 2024, the project won a Gussie Award for Electric Commercial Passenger Vessels: In Development — an early sign the industry saw what Rollert was building before it ever floated.

Where Electrified Marina came in

Rollert had a route, approvals, a dock, and a builder already at work on the hull. He and Inriver had sourced the major components too — two 48V Electric Yacht QuietTorque™ 15.0 LC motors and a bank of LiTime LiFePO4 batteries.

What he needed was someone who knew how to make an electric propulsion system actually work on a boat like this: how to set it up, how to configure the battery bank, and how to make it run reliably on a shallow-draft, wakeless hull where there was no room for error.

Rollert found Electrified Marina through the company's work in electric marine propulsion. Electrified Marina advised on the propulsion setup and the LiTime battery system — the configuration decisions that turn a set of sourced components into a working electric powertrain. On a river where gas engines are off the table, getting that setup right was part of what made a wakeless, shallow-draft electric ferry viable.

What "Just Get On" actually is

Just Get On is a 35-foot, fully electric, wakeless ferry. It covers Watertown to Beacon Hill in about 40 minutes, carries 20 passengers, and draws just 14 inches to clear the river's shallow stretches. Because it throws no wake, it won't disturb the rowing crews or erode the banks. Two bathrooms, enclosed heated seating, and an estimated fare of $12 to $18 make it a real alternative in a region that ranks among the country's worst for traffic. The name is deliberately plain. Wada Hoppah built the boat for residents, not tourists, and Just Get On is meant to sound the way people around here actually talk.

In the water, and running on batteries alone

This summer, it happened. Watertown Police escorted the boat down Mt. Auburn Street from the shop to the river, where Just Get On became the first commercial ferry to run on the Charles in about a hundred years. Other ferries in the region run hybrid systems. This one runs on batteries alone.

The boat isn't finished, and it isn't in service yet. Railings, side windows, and back gates still have to go on over the coming weeks while the crew tests the boat's systems on the river. But the vessel is in the water and moving under its own power — and for three years, both were open questions.

From advising a build to a full repower

The Charles River project is one part of what Electrified Marina does: advising a build team on electric propulsion and battery setup when they have the boat and the components but need the expertise to make it all work together.

The other side (besides finding your perfect boat that already exists) is taking the whole job. Electrified Marina performed the complete electric repower of Tempe Boat Cruisin' in Arizona — a hands-on conversion from a conventional drivetrain to clean, quiet electric power, start to finish.

Between the two, the throughline is the same: electric propulsion and battery systems for boats on waterways with real constraints — shallow water, wake limits, and restrictions on gas engines. Whether a customer needs guidance through the hard parts or a full conversion, a boat that can't run a combustion engine isn't a dead end . With the right electric setup, engineered for the conditions, it's a boat that gets to work.

What comes next

Just Get On is a prototype — a proof of concept. Once it clears its remaining checkpoints and marine classifications, Rollert plans to put more boats on the water, scaling toward a full-size Eco-Ferry fleet. Passenger service is targeted for Summer 2026, pending permits from the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation.

A century after the city built a dock it could never use, the river finally has a boat that fits it.

A Record Breaking Journey

Elvene sets out to end range anxiety

In July, Elvene completed an impressive 125 NM journey over three days relying off of solar energy from their solar electric boat.

Last week, Elvene's Amber , a 22ft cudi cabin ended its record breaking 200 NM journey through Finland Archipelago. The trip was a total of 5 days and a little over 200 NM. The crew includes Elvene's CEO Emil Finne and Justin Dallinger from Aqua Lectric.

Electric boating is here, and with it comes a wave of excitement—and a few lingering questions. One of the most common concerns we hear at Electrified Marina is about “range anxiety.” You've probably heard the term used in the world of electric vehicles, but what does it mean for boaters? More importantly, is it something you actually need to worry about?

Many people assume electric boats behave like combustion boats, when in reality, electric systems are designed to give more reliable, real-time feedback. If you do it right, you can make your trip even more fuel efficient than a gas powered engine.

4. New Technology Jitters

Let’s be honest—trying something new always comes with a little discomfort. Range anxiety is often more about confidence than capability.

✅ Why Range Anxiety Isn’t a Legit Concern

Here’s the truth: range anxiety doesn’t match the way most people actually use their boats. Most boaters rarely exceed 20–30 miles on an average outing. How often does your boating day consist of pulling up to a sandbar or anchoring out to swim? It doesn't consume much energy to do either.

Today’s electric boats offer realistic , usable ranges that easily cover these distances. Unlike gas gauges, electric systems give precise , real-time data on your battery life, distance remaining, and even estimated return range. Many e-boats, like the X Shores, include an energy saver mode which will lower your speed automatically when battery levels get low around 10%. With these tools at the helm, electric boating is about predictability, not guesswork. That’s a major advantage for boaters.

It takes 5 seconds to plug in an electric boat...

...about the same amount of time it takes to charge any electric vehicle. Locate your power source, grab your J1772 adapter, and your charger and plug into the outlet. Although most marina's having shore power charging (110V - 220V), many people assume that places to charge are few and far between. It's true that depending where you live, your residential dock may not have the electrical capacity you need to charge; in which case you can get it installed.

How long does it take for your boat to fully charge?

It's true, it takes five seconds to plug your boat in.

Of course, in order for your boat to completely charge, it will require a overnight charge, especially if you don't have access to a level three charger. Level three or fast chargers can take a boat from an 8 hour charge to a one hour charge, which gives you more time on the water.
