A Record Breaking Journey

Elvene sets out to end range anxiety

In July, Elvene completed an impressive 125 NM journey over three days relying off of solar energy from their solar electric boat.

Last week, Elvene's Amber , a 22ft cudi cabin ended its record breaking 200 NM journey through Finland Archipelago. The trip was a total of 5 days and a little over 200 NM. The crew includes Elvene's CEO Emil Finne and Justin Dallinger from Aqua Lectric.

Boat owners know that properly and regularly maintaining your watercraft it a headache but it's critical in safety, and guaranteeing your boat lasts as long as possible.

What maintenance is required for an electric boat?

Replacing your sacrificial anodes is something you'll need to do as part of your boat maintenance, regardless if it is electric. Boats with an internal combustive engine require oil changes, monitoring spark plugs, and fuel filters. With an electric boat you eliminate all of those worries.

Other electric boat maintenance could consist of replacing seawater pumps or bilge pumps every few years but it will be mostly just cleaning. How do you charge an electric boat? Do you charge on land? All these questions and more are answered.

Myth:

Charging an Electric Boat is way too difficult

Fact:

It takes 5 seconds to plug in an electric boat...

...about the same amount of time it takes to charge any electric vehicle. Locate your power source, grab your J1772 adapter, and your charger and plug into the outlet. Although most marina's having shore power charging (110V - 220V), many people assume that places to charge are few and far between. It's true that depending where you live, your residential dock may not have the electrical capacity you need to charge; in which case you can get it installed.

How long does it take for your boat to fully charge?

It's true, it takes five seconds to plug your boat in.

Of course, in order for your boat to completely charge, it will require a overnight charge, especially if you don't have access to a level three charger. Level three or fast chargers can take a boat from an 8 hour charge to a one hour charge, which gives you more time on the water.

The truth is if electric boats weren't safe or more dangerous than a traditional engine, the industry wouldn't be where it is today.

Electric Boats Are Dangerous Because of the Batteries!

Fact:

The Batteries in Electric Boats Are Marine-Grade, Meaning...

...they are held to a different level of standard than the batteries seen in electric cars and other propulsions. Marine-grade indicates the materials included can withstand harsh marine environments. The batteries we put in boats have a marine graded casing, protecting it from any contact with water. Specifically they are IP rated 67, or ingress protection rating . This rating is used against most electronics, like our phones. You can read more about it here .
